Elizabeth Anne Brown, born on August 8, 1929 in Salt Lake City to Bert and Jean Brown (nee Jones), spent her childhood years on the coasts where her father was stationed in the U.S. Navy, and in Salt Lake City, her parents’ families’ home. Her lifelong love of reading, literature, and music began during her early years. She became a good pianist, and thoroughly enjoyed learning and understanding new things. After graduating from East High School in Salt Lake City in June 1945, she began college, at the age of 16, at American University in Washington, DC (where her father was stationed after the war). Soon after, she moved with her family to Hawaii, when her father’s orders took him there, attending University of Hawaii for a short time. She became acquainted with her future husband, Charles, when both were traveling with their families (and Navy fathers) on a transport from Hawaii back to California in 1950. She completed her undergraduate degree in chemistry at American University in 1951, and worked for a year in the Laboratory of Tropical Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. She married in August 1952, and after partial graduate work in chemistry at the University of Delaware, started her family. During her children’s youngest years, she played the parish church organ, actively participated in her children’s PTAs, and taught high school religious education classes. Once her youngest was in school, she went back to school, receiving her teacher’s certification from Towson State University in 1972. For the next 20 years, she taught chemistry, physics and general science in Baltimore County (Perry Hall Junior and High Schools), completing her Masters Degree (Liberal Arts) from Johns Hopkins University along the way (1976). She and her husband attended concerts, plays and lectures during the season. During her summers free, she enjoyed her multiple-week stays at the beach, finally buying a house there in 1987, and also, her travels in Europe with her good friend and her youngest daughters. After retiring from teaching in 1992, she was able to spend more time enjoying the beach house, as well as traveling in the U.S. to visit family (including daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren), long-time friends, and interesting places, and to more distant places, primarily on cruises with her husband. Her lifelong pride in her extended family and their accomplishments was evident in her letters to families and friends, as well in her enjoyment of all family gatherings.

The family will receive friends at the E.F. Lassahn Funeral Home, 11750 Belair Rd. (Kingsville) on Monday, October 13, 2014, from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Stephen Church (Bradshaw) on Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at 10 am. Interment at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens (Marriottsville).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grace Anne Ossing Fellowship; Kimmel Cancer Center Development Office, 100 N. Charles St, Suite 234, Baltimore, MD 21201.
