Obituary for Charles Theodore "Ted" Holzmueller Jr.

Charles “Ted” Holzmueller, Jr.

The family of Charles Theodore "Ted" Holzmueller, Jr. is saddened to announce his passing on Monday, December 21, 2020 at the age of 90 years. He left us peacefully after a brief illness and a long full life. He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-two years, Madelin Olive Stehly Holzmueller. He is survived by his sister Phyllis Matthew and three loving children: a son, Keith Brent Holzmueller & daughter-in-law, Roberta Paikoff Holzmueller; two daughters, Sherrie Lynn Buckley and Christine Gail Holzmueller & partner, Ray Rickell; his grandchildren Michael Buckley & granddaughter-in-law, Melanie Brandenberg , Ryan Buckley, Brandon Buckley, Allyson Buckley, Nathan Holzmueller and Aaron Holzmueller; his great grandson Michael Liam Buckley; and his niece Linda Honsinger and nephew Noah Bradley.

Born on May 8, 1930, Ted grew up in Drexel Hill, PA where he developed an interest in stamp and coin collecting. He was a lifelong Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles sports fan and attended his first Eagles football game in the mid 1940's. Ted was lucky to live long enough to see the Philadelphia Eagles win their first ever NFL Super Bowl on February 4, 2018! Convinced he was solely their bad luck charm, Ted watched none of the regular season or playoff games that year. We were all thrilled when his oldest grandson convinced him to watch the Superbowl! It was a nail biter, and when the Eagles won, Dad stood up and said," I can now die a happy man." Well, we sure were glad that he didn't.

Ted graduated from Upper Darby High School and Muhlenberg College and was stationed in Okinawa while serving in the United States Army. He met Madelin in Allentown, PA, and they were married at the historic Muhlenberg Memorial Chapel. After marriage, Ted began a twenty-five-year career with Montgomery Ward, working and living in Maryland, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Virginia before becoming the accounts payable director at their regional headquarters in Baltimore, MD. After retiring from Montgomery Ward, he worked as an accounts payable consultant for Walmart, Sysco and other major retailers and distributors.

In his later years Ted became an enthusiastic golfer who enjoyed walking the courses rather than using a cart. After Madelin's death in 1993, Ted remained very close with her family and their annual Stehly-Olson summer reunions in Macungie, PA were one of his favorite events. When he was still driving, he went up a day early to play in the annual Stehly-Olson Open golf tournament and then stayed a day later to take Madelin's sisters and "the girls" out to lunch. At the reunions Ted was often the Master of the Egg Toss ceremony and the one who had the winners' names engraved on the Family Plaque. Eventually Ted stopped golfing and decided to spend more time at the Racetrack studying the odds and betting the horses. He enjoyed this so much! His family has many happy memories meeting him at the Timonium racetrack during the Maryland State Fair week. One time he was invited to Hawaii during that week and chose the track. Ted was also involved in the planning of his high school reunions and reconnected with many of his childhood friends.

Ted's grandchildren were a constant source of joy in his life and he was blessed to become a great grandfather in 2019! A young lady Ted worked with in Arkansas cheerfully greeted him one morning and he grumbled. It just so happened that his first grandchild was expected to arrive soon. She said, "Well! Your grandbaby should just call you Grumps." That name worked out and was actually perfect. After his wife's death, Ted became very involved in their lives. He adored his grands and did not miss a ballet recital, wrestling match, Birthday, high school or college graduation! They will carry the memory of Grumps in their hearts forever.

Ted had many friends and family members who cared for him and will be sorely missed. He lived well, laughed often, and loved his family.

A great soul never dies.
It brings us together again and again."
