Obituary for Richard Gladden Maxwell

Richard Gladden Maxwell of Nottingham, MD passed away on January 25, 2022 after a year-long battle with lung cancer. He was 80 years of age.
Mr. Maxwell was born on March 20, 1941 in Kingsville, MD. He was the loving son of the late Edward and Elizabeth Maxwell. He received his education at the McDonogh School where he enjoyed participation in multiple sports especially wrestling. After graduating high school in 1960, he attended University of Maryland, College Park but left after one year and joined the family’s business, the McMahon Bus Company. During that period, he also proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves from 1962 to 1970. In 1968, Richard began his long-term career at the C & P Telephone Company. Known as a resourceful problem solver, he spent 28 years working as a lineman for what eventually became Verizon. He retired in 1996.
Throughout much of his life, Mr. Maxwell remained very active. He was interested in physical health and sports. He challenged himself to complete 5 full marathons but his favorite sport was golf. He also greatly enjoyed watching sports including football, baseball, and golf.
His hands were never idle. Mr. Maxwell was very creative and handy. In his early years, he was known to occasionally write poems and for a time he developed a talent in woodcarving of ducks and other small animals. Following his retirement from Verizon, between handyman jobs, he devoted his time to his children, assisting his sons in their work, and helping his children with their individual home renovation projects.
Above all, Mr. Maxwell will be remembered most by those who knew and loved him for his warmth, lighthearted jokes, and generous helping hand to all. He is survived by his former wife and loving life-long friend, Carol M. Maxwell; son, David R. Maxwell and Bethany Dipaula; son, Jonathan E. Maxwell and Christine A. Maxwell; daughter, Alice C. Maxwell; grandchildren, Kristen Gasparo and Ian Maxwell; siblings, Lyle Maxwell, Bonnie Maxwell, Jack Maxwell, Libby Houserman, and the late William Maxwell; and devoted long-time companion, Harriet Shaver.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Richard Gladden Maxwell will be held on March 27, 2022 at 2pm at Saint John’s Episcopal Church, 11901 Belair Rd., Kingsville, MD 21087. There will be live Stream at St. John’s Episcopal, Kingsville, MD –Home/ Facebook or stjohnskingsville.org. Following the service, there will be a burial ceremony on the Church grounds and then light reception. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Gilchrist, American Cancer Society, Special Olympics or Wounded Warriors veterans.
