Edward A. Wren

On May 16, 2013 Edward A. Wren passed away, a 1953 graduate of Kenwood High School (Essex, MD), Ed Wren's coaching helped CCBC Essex Capture its first NJCAA championship in any sport. In his third NJCAA Tournament appearance, Coach Wren led the Knights to the 1974 NJCAA Men's Soccer Championship with a 2-0 win over Suffolk County Community College (Selden, NY). His teams made six other NJCAA Tournament appearances (1969, 1973, 1975, 1976,1978, 1979), captured seven NJCAA Region XX Championships (1969, 1973-76, 1978, 1979) and earned five Maryland JUCO Conference crowns (1970, 1972-1974, 1978). In short, he built the framework for sucess and a tradition for the CCBC Essex Men's Soccer program that is still enjoyed today. Ed also served one year as acting athletic director at CCBC Essex.


Coach Wren's career record was 144-52, which represents a very impressive .734 winning percentage. During his 15 year tenure at CCBC Essex, 14 student-athletes earned NJCAA All-American honors. In 1994, he was inducted into the NJCAA Soccer Hall of Fame.


Ed earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland (College Park, MD) in 1957 and a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinios (Champaign, IL)in 1962. He retired as an associate professor of Health Education at CCBC Essex in 1999 after 35 years of service.


He resided in Baldwin, MD with his wife of 48 years, Betty L. (nee Pauley) Wren; devoted father of Mark Edward Wren and his wife Donna and Bradley Arthur Wren; loving grandfather of Nathan Mark, Maya Ann, and Noelle Louise Wren; brother of William Christian Wren, Jr.; also survived by 11 nieces and nephews, 3 brother-in-laws and 5 sister-in-laws.


The family will receive friends at the E.F. Lassahn Funeral Home, P.A. 11750 Belair Road (Kingsville) on Sunday, May 19,2013 from 2-4 & 6-8pm. Funeral services will be held at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church 3911 Sweet Air Road Phoenix, Md. Interment Gardens of Faith Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Gilchrist Center or the Care Center at GBMC or the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute at GBMC.
