Evelyn Ruth Hess (Clayton)

Evelyn Ruth Clayton Hess of Oak Crest, formerly of Fallston, MD died on March 17, 2015. She was born on August 14, 1915 in Fork, MD, a daughter of the late George and Eva (Scarff) Clayton. She was the last surviving member of her family, having been predeceased by sisters, Helen Clayton and Elizabeth Clayton Roberts, and brothers, Robert, James and Stewart Clayton.

Ruth graduated from Towson High School in 1932. She then attended Baltimore Business College and subsequently worked at Home Mutual Insurance Company for 21 years. She and George Herbert Hess were married on May 14, 1955. They lived at the Hess Family homeplace in Upper Cross Roads farm for 43 years, where they raised vegetables, turkeys and chickens. They had an egg route into Towson and Baltimore for 20 of those years. After Herbert’s death in 1988, Ruth remained on the farm until 1998, when she moved to Oak Crest Village in Parkville, MD. At Oak Crest, she enjoyed swimming, raising and sharing the flowers that she grew in her garden, volunteering at the care center, arranging flowers for dining rooms, visiting and sending cards to the sick and volunteering at Renaissance Gardens. She also participated in many other activities.

Earlier in her life, Ruth was a 4-H leader, did volunteer work at nursing homes and during WWII volunteered with the USO at Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

Ruth and her husband, Herbert, were long time members of Fallston United Methodist Church where they were both very active; Ruth having taught Kindergarten Sunday School there for 20 years. She was a member of the UMW, which she joined when she was 18 years old.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Marie Clayton, four nieces; Janice Hartlove, Delores Scocos, Janet Sites and Carol Buckmeier, several great nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Visiting at the E.F. Lassahn Funeral Home, P.A., 11750 Belair Road (Kingsville) on Friday, March 20, 2015, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held at Fallston United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 21, 2015, with viewing from 10-11 am at which time the service will begin. Interment Fallston United Methodist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fallston United Methodist Church, 1509 Fallston Road, Fallston, MD 21047 or a charity of your choice.
