On August 27, 2024, Frieda Maria Ratych (née Simonik) passed away, she was born Dec 6 1930 in the town of Stará Ľubovňa, Czechoslovakia. Daughter of Juliana and Peter Simonik; wife of Alexander Peter Ratych; mother of Paul and Steven Ratych; mother in law of Christine Ratych (wife of Paul Ratych); grandmother of Joseph, Adam Jessica, Kaitlyn, Andrew and Nicholas Ratych; great-grandmother of Mateo Ratych; sister of Olga Hanas and and the late Gertrude Podolak.
Frieda left Czechoslovakia in 1948 with her two sisters Olga and Gertrude on the Queen Mary to become a U.S. Citizen. For the first 10 years in the U.S she was a nanny for the Lobe Family whom she loved dearly.
Married Alexander Peter Ratych Nov 2 1957. She helped her husband start a Land Surveying business in 1967. She helped her husband, a Professional Land Surveyor, type up property descriptions and performed other secretarial duties.
She was a devout Roman Catholic celebrant at both St. Michael’s Ukrainian Church on Eastern Ave. and St. Dominic’s Church in Hamilton where she sang in the St. Dominic’s Church Choir for 10 years.
She loved to crochet and do needlepoint in her spare time. She did volunteer work for the Maryland School for the Blind, American Cancer Society and March of Dimes. She enjoyed cooking and baking from scratch and also making dresses with her mother Julia Simonik. She enjoyed making traditional Ukrainian dishes like Pirogies, Borscht, and Halupke. She also loved to can pickled beets, chalamade, peaches and cherries.
She loved caring for her six grandchildren as they grew up. She cared for them during the day and also took them to and from school daily. She loved to throw dinner parties with her friends and family.
Visiting at the Lassahn Funeral Home, Inc., 7401 Belair Road (Overlea) on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, from 3-5 and 7-9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Dominic Church, 5302 Harford Road, on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at 10 am. Interment Parkwood Cemetery.
