George F. Minarik Sr. passed away Thursday Evening, November 6, 2014, surrounded by his family in his Kingsville home.
A loving husband for 68 years, George is survived by his wife Marie, and their sons and daughter in laws: George Jr. & Leslie Minarik, William and Linda Minarik, James & Rosemary Minarik and Thomas & Ginny Minarik; His brother and sister in law Ronald & Bonnie Minarik; His 6 Grandchildren and spouses: Sarah Minarik & Andy Cretcher, Kimberly & Joey Maniscalco, Nicole Minarik & Aaron Jackson, Neale & Vanessa Minarik, Devon & Carrie Minarik and Evan & Lauren Minarik; and 8 Great Grand Children.
George was a proud graduate of the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and Johns Hopkins University. He retired after 35 years as an Engineering Department Head at Western Electric’s Broening Highway plant where his team developed the production of the telephone connectors that connects millions of home phones across the world.
As a boy George worked in the Minarik Family store on Chesterfield Ave. in Baltimore and he caddied at local golf courses. He was on the Poly Swim team where he had occasion to swim with “Tarzan” (Johnny Weissmuller) of Movie and Olympic Fame. George also worked as a young usher at the Hippodrome Theater where he teamed with a young actor (Ronald Reagan) to decorate a parade car to promote the current show.
As an Army veteran and George’s unit liberated towns in Europe and he rose to the rank of Captain. George is a member of the American Legion Parkville Post.
George met the beautiful Mary J. Brommund (Marie) after the war and sparks flew in spite of Marie being covered head to toe in a poison ivy rash. It wasn’t long until they married on New Year’s Day January 1, 1947. George enjoyed family activities, golf, archery, painting, and bowling. He was 93.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2014, from 2 pm to 5 pm with a tribute immediately following at the E.F. Lassahn Funeral Home, P.A., 11750 Belair Rd, Kingsville, MD 21087. A Graveside Service will be held on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at 11am at the Highview Memorial Gardens, 3433 Fallston Road, Fallston, MD 21047.
