Irene Marie Madison, 96, of 2612 Peace Drive, West Lafayette, Indiana, formerly of Perry Hall, Maryland, died on June 1, 2014 at Franciscan St. Elizabeth East hospital (Lafayette, IN).
Born in Sioux City, Iowa, she lived in Nebraska, Missouri, California, Maryland, and moved to West Lafayette in 1994.
She was a 1935 graduate of Central High School in Sioux City and in 1940 received a B.A. degree from Morningside College in Sioux City. She earned a M.Ed. from Johns Hopkins University in 1965.
She was married in Sioux City to Earnest L. Madison. Mr. Madison worked for the U.S. Weather Bureau and the Department of Navy. He preceded her in death October 19, 1989.
Mrs. Madison worked in the credit department of Rice's Bakery in Baltimore and later as a teacher and counselor in the Baltimore County School System until her retirement in 1975. She was a member of the Retired Teachers' Association of Baltimore County and of the Maryland Retired Teachers' Association. Over the last 20 years in Lafayette, she was president of Epsilon Sigma Omicron Book Club and the YWCA Book Club. She organized two writers' groups and held memberships in the Lafayette Symphony Guild, the Art Museum, Cosmos Club, Civic Theatre, the Three O'Clock Club, Trinitarians, and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her son, James Madison (wife Beverly) of Grand Prairie, Texas; her son, Dr. David Madison (wife Leslie) of Severna Park, Maryland; her daughter, Julie Conlon (husband Phil) of West Lafayette, Indiana. Three nieces, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held in the Chapel at St. Michael Lutheran Church, 9534 Belair Road in Perry Hall, Maryland on June 9, 2014 at 11 a.m. A memorial service will be held at a later date in June at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lafayette, Indiana.
Memorials may be offered to the Westminster Village Foundation in West Lafayette or to St. John Lutheran Church in Parkville, Maryland, or to St. Michael Lutheran Church in Perry Hall, Maryland.
