Janet M. Schroeder (Markel)

Janet M. Schroeder (90) died January 21, 2012 at Calvert Memorial Hospital. Prince Frederick, MD. She was born in Altoona, PA to William and Alice Markel. Her husband, Leo Schroeder predeceased her in 2007. She graduated at 16 from Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, MD and was in all the vocal musical organizations. She attended business school classes, and then worked at the Pentagon in the office of the Secretary of the Army Air Corps, which later became the U.S. Air Force. She met Leo when she was volunteering at a USO in Washington, DC, and they continued to correspond when he went to sea. They were married in 1946, and she continued her job while he went to George Washington University. She followed his job with the Martin Company through Baltimore and briefly in California. She learned to drive when they moved to New Mexico. She was active with her sons' scouting troop as a Den Mother. Returning to Baltimore, she held several jobs including substitute teacher, real estate, and selling cosmetics and costume jewelry. She was active with the Lutheran Church, singing in the church choir and holding local and regional positions with the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She enjoyed chorus courses at Baltimore County Community College at Essex for several years. She traveled throughout the United States by car to visit relatives and friends. While her son was in the military, she was able to visit at his stations in Hawaii and Italy. She was prolific at knitting and crochet. Through the years she was a faithful member of the Lutheran Churches where the family lived, including Trinity in Alamogordo, NM, Faith in Middle River, MD, St. James in Overlea and most recently, First in Huntingtown, MD. Even though she was diagnosed with Alzheimers' she was still able to recite from memory the prayers and creeds during worship services. She also enjoyed harmonizing with friends at the Senior Center in Prince Frederick, MD when her caregiver Christine Gross would take her. She is survived by a brother Kempton Markel in Corona, California and sister Marilyn Schauer in New Jersey.

Schroeder; sister of Kempton Markel and Marilyn Schauer.

Visiting at the Lassahn Funeral Home, Inc., 7401 Belair Road (Overlea) on Sunday, January 29, 2012, from 3-5 & 7-9 pm. Interment private.
