John James Schmidt, a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend, passed away on October 25, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories and a legacy of kindness, hard work, and love for his family and community.
John was the beloved husband of Frances Virginia Schmidt (née Roth), with whom he shared 68 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a life centered on family, love, and lasting memories. He was the son of the late John Schmidt and the late Doris Schmidt (née George), and the brother of Rosann Scheufele.
He was a proud and loving father to John Kenneth Schmidt and his wife, Susie; Virginia Lynne Flynn and her husband, Jeff; and Jeffery Karl Schmidt. He was a cherished grandfather to Christine Schmidt Redline, Jennifer Flanders, Nick Flynn, and Carl Schmidt, and a loving great-grandfather to Lukas Shreck, Jakob Shreck, Kyleigh Redline, Zack Shreck, Ally Flynn, Jack Flynn, Lila Schmidt, and Emma Schmidt. His family was his greatest pride, and he treasured the time he spent with each generation. He will also be deeply missed by his many extended family members and dear friends.
John had a lifelong passion for the water, especially the Chesapeake Bay. An avid fisherman and crabber, he earned his captain's license and took great pride in building his own fishing boat, the Olde Salt. Being on the water was where John was happiest, whether he was fishing, crabbing, or simply enjoying the peaceful beauty of the Bay. Some of his fondest memories were made during vacations aboard his boat with his grandchildren. He especially loved teaching them how to fish, patiently sharing his knowledge and passing along a passion that meant so much to him. These special moments created memories his family will treasure for years to come.
John was a man who could always be counted on. Known for his calm demeanor, level head, and gentle approach to discipline, he led by example and offered guidance with patience and understanding. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, never hesitating to give his time, skills, or support. A hardworking and capable man, John took pride in building onto his beloved shore house, creating a place for family and friends to gather and make memories.
His dedication extended well beyond his family. John was an active and devoted member of the Bowleys Quarters Community Association, where he served as president. Following Hurricane Isabel, he worked tirelessly to advocate for the residents of his community, demonstrating his commitment to helping his neighbors and rebuilding the place he loved. His willingness to stand up for others and give back to his community reflected the generous spirit that defined his life.
John also knew how to enjoy life's simple pleasures. He was a good dancer who loved getting out on the dance floor, and he especially enjoyed dining at Giovanni's Restaurant. Whether spending time with loved ones, enjoying a meal with friends, or taking his boat out onto the Bay, John found happiness in the moments that brought people together.
Above all, John will be remembered for his steady presence, generous heart, love of family, and deep appreciation for life on the water. He taught those around him not only how to fish, but also the value of patience, hard work, helping others, and making the most of every moment. His love and influence will live on through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister, extended family, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Though he has made his final voyage, the memories he created and the love he shared will remain in the hearts of his family and friends forever. May he rest peacefully, with calm waters and a favorable wind.
