MCKNIGHT, Malcolm McCulloch

Malcolm McKnight, 90, of Bel Air, MD died Monday, October 6, 2025. Malcolm was the son of Col. Charles McKnight and Mary (McGill) McKnight. For sixty years, he resided on the family farm on Harford Road in Fork, MD. In 2005, he retired and moved with his wife Nancy to Cambridge, MD, before later relocating to Bel Air, MD in 2024.

Mr. McKnight, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Nancy Barbara (Coard) McKnight. He was previously married to Marylyn Lee Hain of Bel Air. He is survived by two daughters: Lauren McKnight Goldberg (Richard) of Montclair, NJ, and their children, Hailey, Rachel, Eric and Casey; and Kathryn Alexandra McKnight of Edgewood, MD. He is also survived by a son, Mark St. John McKnight (Cyndi) of Poolesville, MD, and children, Patrick, Matthew, and Allie.

He was a graduate of McDonogh School in Baltimore and the University of Virginia, where he earned a degree in engineering. He also received a master’s degree from Loyola College of Baltimore. A R.O.T.C. graduate, he served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps in Fort McClellan, AL, as a weapons instructor.

Mr. McKnight had a diverse career. Following his military service, he worked for Armco Steel Corp. as a metallurgist in their Baltimore Works. For many years, he was an executive with the restaurant chains Horn & Horn and White Coffee Pot. Later, in the 1990s, he founded Caribparts, a company selling resort and restaurant equipment in the Caribbean and Central America.

He spent much of his life as an educator, teaching mathematics and science. He taught at Edgewood High School in Harford County, beginning in 1958, where he developed and coached the first wrestling team in the county. Malcolm later taught at The Park School in Baltimore County, where he also served as a member of the Board of Trustees. After retirement, he taught several classes at Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University).

A life-long Republican, he ran for the U.S. Congress in Maryland’s 2nd District in the 1970’s and was the first county-wide elected chairman of Baltimore County’s Republican Central Committee.

He was active in his community and church. He was a life-long member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Kingsville, as well as a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge. His participation included being a CASA volunteer working with foster children in the county, working at Camp Agape (an Episcopal camp for children having incarcerated parents) in the summer, serving as a docent at the Dorchester Historical Society and Christ Episcopal Church, and participating in Cambridge’s Resource Day. For several years, he managed his church’s food pantry and a cold weather shelter.

His favorite pastime was extensive worldwide travel. His special interest was Roman history, visiting sites in England, Morocco, Tunisia, and southern Europe. For many years, he wrote a travel column appearing regularly in The Banner, a weekly newspaper in Dorchester County. He also enjoyed model trains. His greatest joy, however, was his time spent with family and friends.

To honor Malcolm’s wishes, a private service and interment will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Kingsville, MD. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to St. John’s Episcopal Church (stjohnskingsville.org) or the United Negro College Fund (give.uncf.org).
