Marie Cardoza Mascarenhas

Marie Bernadette was born on 31st March 1930 in Karachi to Genevieve D’Souza and Richard Cardoza.

She was the second youngest of 6 siblings:

Late Eric (Carmen Barboza), late Mervyn (Lorna D’Cruz), late Norman, Cecil (Christine O’Neil) & late Dorothy May (who died in infancy).

She had a happy childhood in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, where her father worked in the railways. Summers were spent in Karachi at her maternal grandparents’ home on Kandawalla Rd, Garden East opposite Maryville Home.

Her family moved to their new home at Pedro D’Souza Rd, Karachi in 1948.

She married Dacian Mascarenhas on 18th May 1958 and moved to his home on Britto Road.

They had 4 children and 6 grandchildren :

Late Mary Ann (Sidath Samaranayake); Stephanie, Brianna

Maurice (Rajasri Ganesan); Nundhini

Christine (Edward Zuzarte) ; Julian, Gracie, Catherine

Malcolm.

She also leaves behind her husband’s surviving brothers, Fr Canise and Oswin (Jean D’Souza).

She was trained as a Montessori teacher, by Maria Montessori herself. She taught in St Patrick’s Girl’s School from 1987 to 1995. Earlier she worked and taught at St Lawrence’s Boy’s School and St Rita’s School. She also participated in various parish activities at St Lawrence’s Church, Karachi, including the Sodality, Legion of Mary, making stuffed toys for the melas and playing the piano for children’s concerts.

After the sudden death of her husband Dacian in 1993, Marie moved to the US in 1995. She lived in Stamford CT till 2004 and then in Baltimore MD.

Marie loved chatting with her friends and family around the world. She never forgot anyone’s birthday or anniversary. She was known for her laughter and good humor, in spite of her many illnesses and bereavements. She was always thankful and forgiving.
