Mary Elizabeth Hearn, of Perry Hall, MD, died suddenly on Sunday, April 12, 2015. She was 85.
Born January 18, 1930 in Clarksville, PA to the late James Edward McManus and Grace Ann McManus (nee Boyle), Mary graduated from Duquesne University in 1951 where she met her beloved first husband, John Barry Hearn Sr., who preceded her in death in 1981. Mary and John first settled in Dundalk, MD and then later in Perry Hall, MD where they raised eight children. She remarried in 1996 to Colonel Stanley D. Cox, USMC (Retired). Mary was a Baltimore County teacher who retired in 1990, after 20 years in Business Education. An avid and creative quilter and a lover of the arts, she inspired and supported creativity in her children. For the past 20 years, she has enjoyed treating her large and extended family to a week at the beach in Emerald Isle, NC. She also enjoyed travel, within the states and internationally, with her husband and his family. One of her special interests was playing Bridge on Friday nights with her sister Frances and their friends. An opinionated follower of current events, she faithfully watched Charlie Rose’ interviews and enjoyed Jon Stewart. She and Stan relaxed by watching old movies on TCM and foreign film.
She is survived by her husband, Stanley D. Cox. She is the devoted mother of Moira Schwartz and her husband Henry, Jeanne Hearn, John B. Hearn Jr. and his wife Janis, Sheila Bragg and her husband Robert, Dennis Hearn and his wife Jenine, Frances Hearn and her husband Jon Holz, Grace Hearn and her husband Michael Savage, Katie Hearn Zang and her husband Chris, Victoria Mouras and her husband Steve, Deborah Wonch-Cox and her husband Howard, Christopher Cox and his wife Jane, and the late Michael Hearn. She delighted in her 21 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sisters Joan Berwick, Frances Marconi, Eileen Muhly and preceded in death by her brothers Bill, Patrick, and Bernard McManus.
Visitation will be held at E.F. Lassahn Funeral Home, 11750 Belair Road (Kingsville) on Tuesday, April 14, 2015, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, 8420 Belair Road, Fullerton, MD 21236 on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at 9:30 am. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary’s honor to Center Stage, 700 North Calvert Street, Baltimore, MD 21202 (410-332-0033).
