Born on April 22, 1928, Maurice (Pop) was the son of Clarence Sr. and Eleanor Jones. Growing up on Jones Road in Bradshaw cultivating vegetables with his father during the Great Depression in the 1930s, Pop grew to value above all else family and learning! Every object and every person had a purpose to Pop, and this compassion made Pop one of the most engaging conversationists. He could strike up a friendly conversation with just about anyone! His presence was infectious. In his teenage years (1941-1947), Pop always felt pulled from his love of learning due to the demanding necessities of agricultural living. In pursuit of knowledge, in 1946, Pop enlisted in the US Army Corp of Engineers to receive formal training in operating and maintaining heavy equipment. After graduating from basic training, Pop was deployed to the Kyushu islands in Japan to build air fields in preparation for the US bombardments of Korea in the eventual Korean War. He had thousands of stories to tell!
After 3 years of active duty overseas, Pop returned to the farm in the Winter of 1949, but continued his career as an equipment operator for the Local 37 Union with IA Construction and CJ Langenfelder. That next Spring, Pop married Josephine and had 5 beautiful children. Although living on a no longer active vegetable farm, he steadfastly believed that one day the Jones’s would return to their agricultural roots to provide that sense of belonging, purpose, protection, and love that had once satisfied his compassion for family and learning.
In 1984, Pop’s dream of the Jones Farm resurrection began to take shape when his youngest child Maurice Jones Jr. finished college and turned down a civil engineering career in order to build Jones Family Farm which was directly across the street from the family’s original farm. Every second he could spare, Pop invested his time and money to rebuild the life that he had once loved! From fixing the old John Deere B to planting tomato plants by hand, Pop slowly resurrected the Jones Family Farm name back into prominence. In 1989, both Pop and Maurice Jr. through their combined love of farming and legacy were able to purchase a new farm in Harford County after being forced to leave their homestead on Jones Road in Bradshaw due to E¬minent Domain.
Pop committed his life to the fulfillment of many dreams, but nothing made him prouder than seeing the continuation of Jones Family Farm. A place where he had the freedom to infinitely learn everything at his own pace, to grow anything, to invent anything, to protect his family and finally where he could feel fulfilled. Pop’s life was an arduous journey full of intrafamilial knots, but through being dedicated to a life of farming, Pop was able to free himself by creating a world that he could love! Family was everything to him. He loved living on the farm and being available 24-7 to his family. He was the best father and grandfather we could have ever asked for! We miss you Pop and your love and commitment for your family will never be forgotten! Your legacy will continue forever at Jones Family Farm.
