Oris Stanton, aged 89, of Nottingham, MD, passed away August 22nd, 2026, in hospice care.

Oris, originally from Cleveland, Mississippi, was born at home, to Ernest and Essie Stanton. He grew up on a cotton farm, where life was hard, but where community and faith were strong.

Oris graduated from Delta State University as an undergrad, where he majored in chemistry, and Purdue University, where he earned a master’s degree in chemistry. He also attended the University of Kentucky and the University of Mississippi, where he did further graduate work in chemistry.

Oris met his wife, Gloria (Glass) Stanton at church in Wisconsin and moved around a bit before settling in Rochester, NY. They had two children, Murray and Sherrill, who they raised in Rochester, while Oris worked for twenty-four years at Kodak as a photographic science instructor in the training department. He was actively involved in Rochester Baptist Church, Community Baptist Church, and the Kodak Camera Club.

Oris and Gloria moved to Somerset, KY where he taught chemistry at Somerset Community College for nine years before retiring. Oris taught Sunday School and was in the choir at Beacon Hill Baptist, before becoming an active member at First Baptist Church in Somerset. Oris was a member of the Burnside zoning and planning committee, and he enjoyed activities such as playing pool, woodcarving with the Berea, KY Welcome Center Woodcarvers, helping with Book-Link, Inc, hiking with “the Loons”, and many church activities.

After the death of his wife, Oris moved to Nottingham, MD, to be near his daughter Sherrill. He continued with many activities including carving, painting, word games, board games, puzzles, and lunches with family.

Oris will be remembered fondly for his love of woodcarving, books, and storytelling. Above all he will be remembered for his love of Jesus, and how his faith impacted others.

Oris was predeceased in death by his parents, Ernest and Essie Stanton, his brothers Billie Dale and Jimmy Stanton, his sister, Waudean Thomas, and his wife Gloria (Glass) Stanton. Survivors include his son, Murray Stanton (Sarah) and his daughter Sherrill Howe (Skip); and his six grandsons: Christopher Howe (Kristen), Nathan Howe, Conner Howe, Gray Stanton, Olav Stanton, and Carl Stanton.
