Richard was born in Brunswick, Georgia, where his father was stationed in
the Navy. The family moved back to the Baltimore area when Richard was
two and although they moved several times, they never ventured far from
Baltimore. He graduated high school in 1971 from Parkdale High School in
Riverdale, Md.
He held many jobs in the building industry, always honing his skills as he
went. His most treasured workplace was on the maintenance staff at
Oldfields School, where he worked as carpenter, snow remover, bus driver
and Yoga Instructor. He also chaperoned the May programs where they
worked with Habitat for Humanity and other hands-on charity organizations.
His memories there have always brought a tear of joy to his eye.
Richard’s life on the Western Shore of Maryland started at age four when
his grandfather purchased a parcel of land on the river near where the
Patuxent joins the Chesapeake Bay. This was where most of his fondest
memories were made and where he spent every summer of his growing-up
years. He finally came to live at the “shore house” as the beloved caretaker
of the family home and shared memory making times with 100’s of friends
with the beautiful views and Richard’s welcoming and peaceful attitude. He
settled into the community of the Solomons Island area and became a
gentle and honored Yoga Instructor and active member of the Meditation
Community for 24 years.
His favorite thing to bless people with was catching crabs off the pier and
inviting whomever he could think of to come enjoy. But the biggest blessing
that he shared, was himself. He nourished himself on helping others with
his carpentry, fix-it, lift-it, haul-it, paint it or plant-it skills. He brought a
peace to every task, never rushed and always kept it positive. The core of
his nature was giving.
Richard was an active member and a huge presence at his church, The
Divine Life Church, for many years, helping to build the chapel and
maintain the beautiful gardens. His relationship with his pastor, Swami
Shankarananda was deep and was the key that opened up his spiritual
hunger and guided him on his deep spiritual journey.
He lived from his heart and his heart fed on his God. Everything he did, he
did true to himself. He was gently honest and honestly humble. And, he
was patient. One could not have had a truer friend.
He is predeceased by his parents Richard Reuling Borig ,Sr., his mother
Barbara Jean Borig (nee Childs) and his younger brother, Alan Scott
(Scotty) Borig. Richard is survived by his sister Dawn Marie Borig, brother
Steven Andrew Borig, niece Kaitlyn Dawson and her husband Chris, aunt
Carol Derr and his life-partner Nancy Wehe, as well as many cousins and
dear friends.
