OUR  HISTORY

Lassahn Funeral Homes History

Founded in 1864, near the end of the Civil War, our funeral home began with Frederick Lassahn, a skilled blacksmith, wheelwright, and cabinetmaker. His shop stood at the southeast corner of Belair Road and Fullerton Avenue in the Overlea area. Through his craftmanship, Frederick naturally found his way into the funeral professions—building and supplying handcrafted caskets and renting horse-drawn hacks to local funeral directors.

Frederick's dedication to service laid the foundation for a family tradition that would span generations. His son, Henry C. Lassahn, became the second generation to care for grieving families, followed by Henry's son, Edgar F. Lassahn, Sr., who carried on the legacy as the third generation. Edgar married M. Eleonora Albrecht, and together they raised three children, two of which whom—Edgar F. Lassahn, Jr. and Ronald C. Lassahn (now retired)—entered the funeral profession in the mid-1900s. Edgar Jr.'s wife, Carol Cherko Lassahn, whose family also operated a funeral home in Yonkers, NY—brought her own experience and dedication and continues to serve alongside the family today.

In 1969, Edgar Sr. purchased the historic Kingsville Inn. After extensive renovations, it opened in 1971 as our second location—E.F. Lassahn Funeral Home, P.A., in Kingsville, expanding oru ability to serve families across northeastern Baltimore County and Harford County.

The legacy continued into the fifth generation when Edgard and Carol's children, Edgar F. Lassahn III and L. Heather A. Lassahn, joined the family business in 1990 and 1994, respectively. Today, Edgar (Fred) III's wife, Lara, works alongside him, as do their children Alexis and Edgar IV (Eddie). Heather's son, Joseph, is also a dedicated part of the family business and received his mortician license in 2025. Representing the sixth generation Alexis, Joseph, and Eddie continue to carry on this time-honored tradition.

In 2016, recognizing the evolving needs of the families we serve, we established our on-site crematory, Chesapeake Cremation Services. This addition ensures that every family we serve can have peace of mind knowing their love one remains in our professional and respectful care through the entire process.

For 160 years, it has been—and continues to be—our family's heartfelt commitment to compassionately guide families through one of life's most difficult times with honor, respect, and personalized care.
